The Octane Render PBR workflow is GPU-first and unforgiving about gamma. Octane’s Universal Material speaks metalness-roughness, so Locker3d maps drop in cleanly—if you do not leave every Image Texture at gamma 2.2. This guide covers node slots in Octane for Blender, Cinema 4D, or Standalone, plus resolution and common firefly causes.
Universal Material map slots
Create an Octane Universal Material (not a leftover Diffuse material from old scenes). Set BRDF to GGX or the current default Octane recommends for dielectrics. Connect:
- Albedo / Diffuse — color map, color space sRGB or gamma 2.2.
- Roughness — grayscale, gamma 1.0. Octane roughness is perceptual; start with the map unscaled, then multiply if the surface is too mirrored.
- Metallic — grayscale, gamma 1.0. Values should hug 0 or 1.
- Normal — Octane Normal Map node, gamma 1.0. Confirm OpenGL versus DirectX; Octane often expects OpenGL (green up).
- Bump — only if you lack a normal; do not stack a strong bump on a strong normal.
- Displacement — vertex or texture displacement for tiles and stone; needs geometry density.
Load a CC0 set from Locker3d so you are not debugging a mislabeled specular pack. Metal is the fastest test: metallic 1, dark albedo, low roughness on polished steel.
Color space and the Image Texture node
In Octane for Blender, each Image Texture has a gamma or color-space field. Color images: sRGB. Data images: linear / gamma 1. In C4D’s Octane Image Texture, uncheck “Legacy gamma” mistakes by setting type to Float for roughness. If albedo looks chalky, you probably loaded it as linear. If roughness looks binary (only chrome or dirt), you loaded it as sRGB. Lighting that does not fight the maps
Octane is an unbiased spectral-capable engine; a 20-stop HDRI will still blow a 0.02 roughness metal. Use a sane HDRI, a gray card, and Octane’s Imager (exposure, highlight compression, ACES or OCIO if your studio uses it). Do not “fix” an overexposed metal by painting the albedo white. Keep dielectrics (wood, concrete) at metallic 0. Browse wood and concrete when you need non-metal references that already tile. Specular on Universal Material can stay at the default IOR-based behavior unless you have measured data.
VRAM, 1K, 2K, and 4K
Octane keeps textures on the GPU. A living room with twenty 4K sets will fail to load on an 8 GB card before the beauty pass starts. Use 1K on books, switches, and distant plaster. Use 2K for furniture and walls. Use 4K on the floor or product the camera kisses. Out-of-core textures exist, but they are slower than choosing the right size. Convert to Octane-friendly formats (TIFF/PNG, not layered PSD) and avoid 16-bit albedo unless you see banding. Mistakes that show up only in Octane
Using a Glossy material with a metalness map, mixing Specular and Universal on one object, forgetting to enable the Octane modifier or object tag, and leaving bump strength at 100 on a 4K normal all create noise or faceting.
