PBR textures do not print themselves. A metalness/roughness set tells a renderer how light should bounce. A printer deposits plastic, resin, or color binder. Some maps transfer. Most do not. If you treat a downloaded PBR pack as a “print-ready material,” you will either get a flat painted look or geometry that is not printable. This guide separates what is useful from what stays on screen.
What a PBR set actually describes
A typical pack from the Locker3d catalog includes albedo (base color), roughness, normal, and sometimes metalness, AO, or height. Those maps assume a shaded 3D surface under HDRI lighting. Printing has no roughness lobe and no environment reflection. Read what PBR textures are if you need the map list. Then decide which channel becomes color, which becomes geometry, and which you only use as a painting reference.
Albedo: color prints and paint masks
Albedo is the only map that maps cleanly to full-color sandstone, color jet, or UV-printed surfaces. Because PBR albedo should contain no baked shadows, it is a better print source than a lit screenshot. Before you send it:
- Convert to the printer’s color profile. sRGB on screen is not the same as binder-jet pigment.
- Lift very dark dielectrics. Values below ~40 sRGB often print as a single black blob.
- Do not expect metalness to become chrome. A steel albedo is the tint of the reflection, not a printable silver.
- For hand-painted minis, export albedo as a flat reference sheet, not as a wrap that fights your primer color.
Wood grain from Locker3d wood textures works well as a decal or hydro-dip reference. Brushed metal albedo is weaker on FDM because layer lines already dominate the surface.
Height and normals: relief that can actually print
Normal maps fake detail with lighting. Printers need real displacement. If the pack includes a height or displacement map, use that. If you only have a normal, convert it to height in your sculpt or material tool, then apply a small displacement on a dense mesh and remesh for print.
Keep amplitude honest. 0.5–2 mm of relief on a 150 mm prop is usually enough. Deeper displacement creates unsupported overhangs and trapped resin. Preview the sliced mesh, not the shaded viewport. A 4K height map is wasted if your nozzle is 0.4 mm; see the resolution guide and match texel size to tool diameter. 1K or 2K is enough for most FDM relief.
Roughness and metalness stay in post-process
You cannot print “roughness 0.2.” You can choose a matte PLA, sand to 400 grit, or spray a gloss varnish. Use the roughness map as a mask: glossy islands get clear coat, rough islands stay raw or get a matte spray. Metalness is a recipe, not a channel. A value of 1 means “use a metallic paint or metal-fill filament,” not “the slicer will make it reflective.”
Resin prints take paint and varnish more evenly than FDM. If the goal is a display piece that matches a PBR render, print smooth, prime, then paint using albedo as the color key and roughness as the finish key.
A workflow that does not waste time
- Pick the texture for color or for relief, not both at maximum strength.
- Apply height at print scale, then decimate. Do not send a 2-million-poly displaced mesh to a hobby slicer.
- Export a color bake only if the printer supports it. Otherwise export a 2D paint guide.
- Test a 20 mm coupon before a 20-hour print.
