A stone and rock PBR textures library covers two jobs that look similar in a folder and different on camera. Cut stone has modules, mortar, and polish. Natural rock has fracture, lichen, and scale that fights tiling. Treat them as different materials even when both live under “stone.”

Cut stone versus natural rock

Ashlar, cobble, slate tiles, marble, and granite are construction products. Their albedo shows mineral color and joints. Roughness shows polish versus cleft face. The normal map should respect mortar depth and chisel marks. Cliff faces, river rock, and boulder skins are landscape products. Their pattern should not look like wallpaper on a 20-meter wall. Locker3d stone textures are CC0; pick the set that matches the drawing, not the one that merely looks “rocky.” License notes: what CC0 allows.

Maps that matter for stone

  • Albedo — mineral color only; no sun side on pebbles.
  • Roughness — polished interiors darker; cleft slate brighter.
  • Normal — joints and crystals; this map sells depth on a flat wall.
  • Height — optional for hero mortar or cobble underfoot.

Metalness stays 0. Wet stone is a roughness drop plus a slight darker albedo, not a metalness trick. Map primer: what PBR textures are.

Interiors: marble, granite, slate

Countertops and feature walls need tighter texel density than a garden wall. Polished marble wants low roughness and a calm normal so veining can read. If you tile a strong vein, rotate or use a larger unique UV on the island only. Slate floors sit closer to floor scale—check grout width against the room. Pair cool stone with warm wood so the interior does not go monochrome.

Exteriors and landscape rock

Facades of rubble or stacked stone belong with wall composition: openings, sills, and a plinth. Landscape rock next to ground should share grit and moisture; a dry beige cliff on wet green grass looks like two photos. For cliffs, consider triplanar projection so UVs do not stretch on slopes. Mix a second rock albedo in cavities instead of scaling one tile until crystals become boulders.

Tiling and breakup

Stone tiles fail when every block is the same size and the same bright quartz sits on a grid. Shrink UVs until modules match bricks or pavers you would specify. Hide repeats with vegetation, shadows, and openings. On interiors, a rug or a shadow from a chair is cheaper than a procedural mask you will not finish. On exteriors, a concrete plinth or metal railing breaks the field.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between stone and rock PBR textures?

Cut stone (marble, granite, ashlar) has designed joints and a more regular module. Natural rock is irregular, better for cliffs, scatter, and landscape. Both are dielectrics: metalness stays at 0.

Should I use height maps on stone walls?

Use normal for most cameras. Add height or displacement when mortar is deep and the camera is close. On large facades, displacement on every tile is expensive and can break silhouettes.

Are Locker3d stone textures free for commercial use?

Yes. Locker3d stone packs are CC0. Use them in archviz, games, and product shots without attribution. Download albedo, roughness, and normal from the stone category.
