High-end PBR for film and VFX uses the same physical maps as games, then adds UDIMs, higher bit depth, displacement, and a color-managed lookdev pipeline. The goal is a material that survives a 4K finish, a stereo grade, and a supervisor zoom. This article is a practical show workflow, including when a free CC0 tileable from Locker3d is the right call instead of a week of scanning.
Lookdev standards, not “more maps”
A film material is still albedo, roughness, a normal or bump, metalness or specular, and often displacement. Extra maps (cavity, coat, sheen, transmission) earn their slot only if the shader uses them. Albedo — or base color in ACEScg — must not contain lighting. Data maps stay linear. If a vendor delivers a “beauty” photo as diffuse, reject it. For map definitions, see what PBR textures are.
Metalness 0/1 remains the rule for wood, concrete, stone, and painted steel. Bare metal is 1 with a dark albedo, not a bright gray with fake specular blobs.
UDIM, resolution, and bit depth
Hero creatures and hero props get UDIMs at 4K per tile, sometimes 8K on the face or logo insert. Set dressing uses one or two 4K tiles or a tileable 2K. Displacement and high-frequency normals should be 16-bit PNG or half-float EXR; 8-bit displacement bands. Albedo can be 8-bit if the grade is gentle, 16-bit if you will push exposure.
- Texel density: pick a show scale (for example 1024 px/m) and stick to it.
- Pad UDIM edges; Mari and Painter both need extra pixels for filters.
- Do not store 8K on a distant wall the camera never holds.
Tileable wood and floor from a CC0 library can fill UDIM 1001 while unique dirt lives on 1002.
Color management: ACES and linear data
Shows typically author in ACEScg or at least work linear with an ACES or AgX view. Texture color space must be tagged: sRGB or ACEScg for albedo, raw/linear for roughness, metalness, normal, and displacement. A normal imported as sRGB will ruin every highlight. Preview in Blender or your lookdev kit with the same OCIO config the lighting department uses. Displacement, renders, and farms
Offline path tracers (Arnold, RenderMan, Cycles, V-Ray) can take real displacement. Keep a mid-frequency normal for glints the displacement cannot afford. Adaptive subdivision should use a pixel-based dicing camera, not a huge global level. Denoise lighting, not textures. If roughness is too noisy, paint it; do not blur the 8K albedo.
CC0 on a professional show
Locker3d is free CC0 PBR. That is acceptable on commercial film and episodic work: no fee, no required credit. You still cannot claim the scans are your unit photography. Mix library concrete with on-set photogrammetry for the hero wall. Legal will still want a source list.
