Floor textures are the first surface a client judges in an interior. If wood planks are too wide, grout is a flat cartoon line, or concrete looks like a 2K stamp, the room fails even when the furniture is good. Treat the floor as a measured material, not as background fill.

Why floors fail first in a render

Floors fill the frame, catch window reflections, and tile across many meters. Any albedo with baked sunlight, any wrong roughness, and any huge module will show. They also sit under furniture, so repetition is easier to spot than on a wall. Start with a complete PBR set—albedo, roughness, normal—from Locker3d floor textures (CC0; see CC0 rules). Then set scale before you add dirt layers. Map basics: what PBR textures are.

Wood floors

Use wood or a wood floor layout. Target 10–20 cm plank width unless you are doing wide engineered boards on purpose. Roughness should show traffic: slightly brighter (rougher) in walk paths if you add a mask later, never a uniform mirror. Keep metalness at 0. Align plank direction with the room’s long axis unless the design says otherwise. Herringbone needs a texture that already contains the pattern.

Tile floors

Ceramic, porcelain, and stone tiles live or die on grout. Albedo grout color should be close to real mortar, not black. Roughness should be higher in the joint than on a glazed tile face. Normal depth should be modest; deep displacement on a whole apartment is rarely worth it. A 30×30 or 60×60 cm module is a sane default—set UVs from that number. Mix with stone when the tile is actually stone, not a print.

Concrete floors

Polished slab, trowel finish, and dusty warehouse concrete are different roughness stories. Pull maps from concrete and keep aggregate size in centimeters, not decimeters. Sealed showroom concrete can go a bit glossier; a garage should not look like a car-paint shader. Expansion joints belong in the layout (geometry or a second material), not as a random crack tiled every 2 meters unless that is the real slab.

Scale, grout, and wear

  • Apply object scale, then unwrap; stretching after UV breaks grout squares.
  • Share one Mapping node across albedo, roughness, and normal.
  • Add wear as a separate dirt or roughness layer, not as baked shadows in albedo.
  • Break repetition with rugs, furniture, and lighting before you hunt a new 8K file.

Frequently asked questions

Why do tiled floor textures look repetitive in interiors?

The UV scale is usually too large, the camera is too high and parallel, or every room uses the same tile rotation. Shrink planks or tiles to real sizes and break the field with rugs, furniture, and shadows.

Should grout be in the albedo or only in the normal map?

Both. Albedo carries grout color. Roughness is usually higher in grout. The normal (or height) carries depth. If grout is only a dark line in albedo, it looks painted on.

Are Locker3d floor textures seamless and CC0?

Locker3d floor packs are CC0 and authored for tiling PBR use. Check the asset page, download albedo, roughness, and normal, then set UV scale to a real plank or tile width.
