Realistic concrete textures are how a massing model becomes a building. Smooth in-situ walls, board-formed facades, and worn garage slabs each need a different roughness and a believable centimeter scale. This guide is for architecture and archviz, not for abstract grey noise on a cube.
Concrete types that sell architecture
- Fair-faced / cast — calm albedo, subtle formwork in the normal, mid-high roughness.
- Board-formed — clear plank impressions; keep board width in a real 10–20 cm range.
- Exposed aggregate — busier albedo and normal; use on floors and landscape walls, not on every interior.
- Weathered / stained — darker leaks under sills; add as a layer, do not bake a cartoon streak into every tile.

Formwork, aggregate, and wear
The normal map should show how the concrete was made: tie holes, board seams, trowel arcs. Roughness should be noisy but not mirror-black; even sealed concrete is not chrome. Albedo stays in a narrow grey-beige range—pure 128 grey looks CG. If you need leaks, multiply a soft dirt in a separate mask so you can reuse the same slab under a different facade. Scale for walls versus slabs
A wall seen from the street can use a larger tile; a kitchen island slab cannot. If aggregate stones are the size of fists in a wide shot, shrink UVs. Apply scale on the mesh. Match neighboring floor joints so the expansion gap looks designed, not like two random materials. Exterior plinths next to stone should share a similar grit size or the base will look like a different building.
Pairing concrete with other materials
Concrete likes contrast. Warm wood furniture, darker metal frames, and a calmer wall paint keep the grey from eating the image. Use one “hero” concrete (board-formed or polished) and one quieter cast concrete for secondary planes. Three loud concretes in one room feel like a catalog, not a project.
Displacement versus normal only
For most archviz cameras, a good normal plus a slight bump is enough and much cheaper. Enable displacement when the camera sits on the slab or when a broken corner is the subject. Keep it on adaptive subdivision or a dense render mesh, and zero it on distant towers. Over-displaced concrete looks like crumpled paper along silhouettes.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my archviz concrete look like plastic or foam?
Usually scale or roughness. If the formwork grain is the size of a window, UVs are wrong. If roughness is too low, concrete reads as coated plastic. Keep metalness at 0 and give the surface a real HDRI.
Should I use displacement on architectural concrete?
Use normal or bump for most stills. Add displacement only for hero close-ups of broken edges or heavy aggregate, and only where the mesh can hold the extra geometry.
